Begin the trek on the first day with a scenic drive from Rohru to Jiskun, the trek’s base camp. Throughout the drive, you will follow the Pabbar River, which adds to the journey’s charm. The last stretch of the road becomes narrow and rugged, but the mountain views make it worth it. After reaching Jiskun (7,630 ft), trekkers settle into their homestay or campsite, meet the trek leader, attend the trek briefing, and prepare for the trekking days ahead.
Day 2: Trek from Jiskun to Jakha – 5 km | 4 hours
The first trekking day begins with a gentle descent, then climbs steeply towards Jakha village. The path passes through traditional Himalayan villages, forest sections, and mountain trails. Jakha, located at 8,755 ft, is famously known as the “Hanging Village” because of its dramatic location on the mountainside. The village is known for its old wooden houses built in traditional stone-and-wood architecture.
Day 3: Trek from Jakha to Saruwas Thatch – 8.1 km | 5–6 hours
Today’s trek takes you deeper into the mountains through one of the most beautiful forest sections of the Rupin Pass trail. The path passes through dense fir, pine, and deodar forests, creating a peaceful, scenic walk. After the forest stretch, the trail gradually descends towards the Rupin River valley, where you walk along the river for some time. Along the way, you may also spot rhododendron shrubs and alpine plants. The day ends at Saruwas Thatch (10,770 ft), a wide alpine meadow campsite that offers your first distant glimpse of the famous Rupin Waterfall.
Day 4: Trek from Saruwas Thatch to Dhanderas Thatch – 3.5 km | 2 hours
On day 4, the trail passes through small alpine meadows that are filled with colourful wildflowers during summer. As you continue walking, the sound of the roaring waterfall grows louder. Soon, you arrive at Dhanderas Thatch (11,700 ft), also known as the Lower Waterfall campsite. The campsite sits right at the base of the massive 1,500-ft Rupin Waterfall, creating a spectacular setting for the night.
Day 5: Trek from Dhanderas Thatch to Upper Waterfall Camp – 3 km | 2–3 hours
Today’s trek is short but very exciting as you climb alongside the magnificent Rupin Waterfall. The trail gradually ascends through rocky terrain and snow patches as you move higher into the alpine zone. During early summer, trekkers may cross snow bridges formed over waterfall streams, adding a thrilling element to the journey. As you gain altitude, the views become more dramatic with snowfields and rugged mountains around you. You reach Upper Waterfall Camp (13,275 ft) by afternoon. The rest of the day is spent resting and acclimatising before the big summit day.
Day 6: Upper Waterfall Camp to Rupin Pass to Ronti Gad – 10 km | 10–11 hours
The climb begins very early in the morning, usually around 3 AM, so that trekkers can reach the pass safely. The trail involves steep climbs across snow slopes and rocky terrain before reaching the famous Rupin Gully, a steep section that leads to the summit. After a tough climb, you finally reach Rupin Pass (15,279 ft), where stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges await. After celebrating the summit, the trail descends into the Kinnaur region, then continues for a long walk to the campsite at Ronti Gad.
Day 7: Trek from Ronti Gad to Sangla Kanda – 5 km | 5 hours
The final day of the trek begins with a gradual descent from Ronti Gad towards the beautiful Baspa Valley in Kinnaur. The trail passes through open valleys, streams, and scenic mountain paths. Compared to previous days, the walk is easier and allows trekkers to enjoy the last views of the Himalayan landscape. After reaching Sangla Kanda, the trek ends. From here, trekkers drive towards Shimla, carrying unforgettable memories of crossing the breathtaking Rupin Pass and experiencing one of the most scenic treks in the majestic Himalayas.
