Buran Ghati Trek
Buran Ghati Trek – Where Every Himalayan Dream Trail Comes Together
The Buran Ghati is a beautiful Himalayan trail located in the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh. It is lesser known but incredibly scenic, situated in the Dhauladhar–Kinnaur region. The trek starts in Janglik Village and ends at Barua Village near Kinnaur. This trek connects two very different valleys, making it one of the most diverse treks in the Indian Himalayas. The trail reaches a maximum altitude of around 15,000 ft at the Buran Ghati Pass, offering an actual high-altitude trekking experience.
The Buran Ghati is very special, offering lush green, less-crowded landscapes that make it ideal for trekkers who like to explore the untouched beauty of nature. The trek begins with charming wooden houses, apple orchards, and pine forests around Janglik Village. As you climb heights during the trek, the scenery opens into vast alpine meadows like Dayara and Litham, surrounded by towering snow-clad peaks.
A highlight of the trek is the beautiful hike to Chandranahan Lake. It is a stunning glacial lake that is tucked high in the mountains. When you get to the pass-crossing day, that is the real thrill. This is because trekkers climb to the Buran Ghati Pass and descend into a completely new valley, offering a rare and rewarding experience after a high climb.
If you love exploring nature’s hidden gems, Buran Ghati stands out. It is the perfect balance of beauty and challenge. You can explore the beauty of the meadows, snow patches, glacial terrain, river crossings, and so much more.
Who is the Buran Ghati Trek Best Suited For?
This trek suits beginners who are ready to challenge themselves and experienced trekkers seeking a scenic and adventurous route. Proper acclimatisation and steady pacing are key, especially on the long pass-crossing day.

Detailed Day-wise Itinerary
Day 1 – Shimla to janglik (160 km, 8 – 9 hours)
Located at an altitude of 9,415 ft. Janglik Village is the base camp of the trek. The 40 km drive takes about 3 hours and offers beautiful valley views and winding mountain roads. Janglik is a traditional village with wooden houses and terraced fields, giving you a peaceful introduction to the trek.
Day 2 – Trek from Janglik to Dayara (7.5 km, 5 hours)
Day 2 is your first trekking day, starting from Janglik Village and ending at the Dayara campsite. You cover a distance of 7.5 km in around 5 hours, gaining altitude from 9,415 ft to 11,115 ft. The trail passes through lush forests and eventually opens into broad meadows. Dayara is known for its expansive grasslands and mountain views, making it a rewarding campsite.
Day 3 – Trek from Dayara to Litham (5.9 km, 3–4 hours)
Day 3 is a relatively short and easy walk from Dayara to Litham. You trek 5.9 km in about 3 to 4 hours, with a gentle altitude gain from 11,115 ft to 11,485 ft. This shorter day helps your body adjust to the altitude. Litham is a scenic campsite surrounded by high ridges and serves as a base for the next few days.
Day 4 – Acclimatisation hike to Chandranahan Lake and back to Litham (6.9 km, 4–5 hours)
Day 4 is reserved for acclimatisation with a hike to Chandranahan Lake. You trek a total distance of 6.9 km, taking 4 to 5 hours. The trail climbs from 11,485 ft to about 13,020 ft and then returns to Litham. Chandranahan Lake is a beautiful glacial lake often surrounded by snow in the early season. Returning to a lower altitude helps reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
Day 5 – Trek from Litham to Dhunda (4.6 km, 4–5 hours)
Day 5 takes you from Litham to Dhunda. Although the distance is only 4.6 km, it takes about 4 to 5 hours due to the steady climb. You gain altitude from 11,485 ft to 13,425 ft. The landscape becomes more rugged and alpine, and Dhunda feels colder.
Day 6 – Trek from Dhunda to River Camp via Buran Ghati Pass (8.4 km, 9–10 hours)
This is one of the most challenging and exciting days of the trek. You trek 8.4 km over 9 to 10 hours, climbing from 13,425 ft to the Buran Ghati Pass at 15,000 ft and then descending sharply to the River campsite at 10,745 ft. The climb to the pass is demanding but rewarding. After crossing the pass, the trail drops steeply into a new valley, offering a vast change in scenery.
Day 7 – Trek from River Camp to Barua and drive to Shimla (7.15 km trek, 5 hours + 6–7 hours drive)
This is the final day of the trek. You descend from the River campsite to Barua village, covering 7.15 km in about 5 hours. The altitude drops from 10,745 ft to 7,725 ft. From Barua, you drive back to Shimla, taking 6 to 7 hours. This marks the end of the trek.
